Frequently Asked Questions

What is Drywall?

The word "drywall" means exactly what it sounds like. It is wall that is hung dry. It also has many other names such as plaster board, sheet rock, wall board, or gypsum board.

Before drywall came around, walls were created with layers plaster over wooden strips called laths. Once the plaster hardened it became a wall, albeit through a very long and inefficient process. After the invention of drywall in the early 1900's, the process of creating walls and ceilings became a lot easier and faster! It only takes some sheets of wall, with some taping and mud.

How is Drywall Made?

First, the gypsum is mined and then heated so that it loses any of its natural water. Next it is mixed with some additives and rehydrated to create a slurry which is then placed between layers of paper to dry.

What is the Difference Between Sheetrock and Drywall?

Drywall and Sheetrock are essentially the same thing! Sheetrock is the most common manufacturer of drywall. So much like with brands like Kleenex, the name "sheetrock" has become a universal term for drywall.

Depending on the size of the project you are working on, it can take anywhere from a couple of days to several weeks. A smaller room will need a day of hanging the drywall, taping, and joint compound (also called mudding), and then an additional day to let the compound dry to follow up with another layer of mud. Adding texture to your wall will also add more time onto your project, but will add a very professional finish to your walls or ceiling.

Why Hire a Professional?

Every drywall job is going to be unique. You want to make sure the right kind of drywall is being used. For example, you wouldn't want to use regular drywall is being installed in a bathroom shower. You also want to be sure to use the right thickness of drywall, that the seams and screws are mudded correctly, that you are using the right type of mud as they all vary with drying times and resistance to sand paper.

In a nutshell, drywall install comes with a lot more variables that an inexperienced person would account for. So even though some people may want to avoid the cost of hiring a professional, just know that you definitely get what you pay for. Of course, we always offer the best pricing we can so that you can still make sure the job is done right. No one wants a shoddy job that may come back to bite them on the butt later.
